Terrible fire, visible from my windows
I glanced out my window and saw this at about noon today. An apartment building caught fire and was a complete loss. A friend who lives near it said on Facebook that she heard what she thought was the roof collapsing, a horrible tearing sound followed by something like thunder or dynamite explosions. The fire department "is confident" they got all the people and two dogs out, but there will have been cats and probably other dogs. Losing your home and everything you have must be devastating--and of course who lives in such buildings with fire risks and faulty electricity? The working poor. People who have no insurance because they can just barely make the rent, people who often hold multiple low-wage jobs. Heartbreaking. And then there is the toxic smoke, an issue for all those who work in downtown Portland.
