Day 1

Left car in Tyndrum, where we parked next to another cyclist. He told us that a party of 30 cyclists were cycling off road on the West Highland Way to Fort William and then on to Ullapool and back 400miles over the weekend. They were travelling light just taking a bivvy bag.

We set off by road heading for Oban. The weather was perfect not too hot but nice and sunny. The attitude of some drivers to cyclists,I feel, is getting worse. After all they have brakes and an accelerator. It must delay the car by about 2 or 3 minutes to stay behind and wait for oncoming cars to pass. One driver decided not to wait and D who was sitting behind my wheel said he was only 5cm from my pannier. It would just take a slight wobble due to the very rutted state of the side of the road!

We stopped for coffee and muffin at an outside picnic table at a store next to the Tight Line (which wasn't open yet) in Lochawe. A man started talking to us and told us that his nephew was Mark Beaumont. (Have to name drop)

Later stopped at the Robin's Nest at Taynult for lunch and decided to leave the busier main road and take the back road into Oban, a road we have cycled before. But had forgotten how hilly it is or maybe we were fitter then. Continued south of Oban and camped in the Rose View campsite.

This shot was taken from the back road to Oban and you can see in the background the hills on Mull.
