The Diehards

Today's the day ...................... for a book review

It's not often that I recommend a book to read - but this one is a bit special.  It's hot off the press and has its official launch tomorrow at a football stadium in Glasgow.  It was written by our good friend Stuart Campbell - and although you might say that I'm biased because of that - if it's even half as good as other books he has written, it will be brilliant.

It's a novel about the sport of walking football, a subject about which he knows a fair amount, playing as he does at local level for Drumchapel United  and internationally, for the Republic of Ireland. The story centres on five geriatric misfits from Glasgow who form a walking football team.  Together they rage against the dying of the light, wreak havoc and embark on a life-changing adventure.

Readers of this journal will know that walking football has recently entered my own life?! So I can't wait to start reading - but, in the meantime, I'll leave you with a quote on the back of the book from Craig Brown, ex-Scotland Manager and Scottish football legend

' .........The wonderfully descriptive narrative in these pages will not only be appreciated by those who participate in the walking game but by any football fan who appreciates a really good and engrossing read'...........
