Frost-bite
Feeding out this morning was awfully unpleasant. We awoke to a -3.5 degree C frost. The farm was white, with a very thick fog to go with it. Visibility was not very good - and as I type this (at 10.15am) it is still freezing, with the temperature at -1 degree C, and the fog just as thick as first thing this morning.
It was -3 C feeding out. The poor cows were eagerly excited to see us arrive in their paddock, and just as excited to get to their balage and grass. Winding up the electric fence, and collecting the standards made our fingers numb - the extra thickness of the frost on the electric fence tape made it just about impossible to wind all of the tape onto its reel.
These two rising 2 year old heifers are enjoying their morning breakfast. If you enlarge the photo you will see the frost on the cows ears and back. Hopefully the sun will turn up sometime today and help thaw most of the frost before it cools down again tonight, and re-frosts on parts of last night frost, creating a hoar frost.
