Nullarbor Roadhouse
I chose this view because I like the light. There are 2 extras of things that caught my eye along the way. Surprisingly the wifi is really good here but I have no phone connection.
We are close to the Bunda Cliffs, yet unseen. There is a purpose built whale viewing place nearby but there were no whales so we didn’t detour. We decided to stay here with power available. Bob counted 27 vans of different types, from huge trucks to small fold out canvas affairs. They have fuel, motel rooms, powered and unpowered camping sites, restaurant, pub. A lucrative business as there is no competition. Fuel was $2.66 per litre here and $1.84 back at the last stop. Quite a difference.
We both did some driving today and saw no wildlife, lots of caravans, 2 cyclists, no motorbikes and a mix of trucks. Large, larger, extra large and ginormous. Some of them are like trains (hence the name road trains). There were also mining trucks being ferried somewhere. The roads have been brilliant.
In the first extra you might see a golf green. It is the 5th hole on the Nullarbor Golf Links. It is called the Dingo’s Den. It starts over on the airstrip somewhere and the green is near the caravan park. This is the world’s longest golf course and runs from Ceduna in SA to Kalgoorlie in WA, 1365km. There are signs to alert people to dingos, snakes and other wildlife and obstacles. Apparently the crows pinching your balls is a common problem. The course is 18 hole par 72 and has a different hole in 18 different towns and roadhouses. Some names are funny, Denial Bay, Wombat Hole, watering Hole, Brumby’s Run, 90 mile straight, Skylab. These take something from local folklore or tourist attractions. This was a tourist venture trying to get golfers to come and stay awhile (and spend some money). I finished the Agatha Christie book yesterday. It the first with Hercule Poirot and was written in 1921. Great old fashioned fun and no I didn’t guess the murderer. The other I have started this afternoon.
