Fledgling
This morning, I got up and opened the garden door for the cats, as usual. Then I went into the kitchen, looked out of the window, and saw this. One of the Redstart chicks, sitting on an empty flower pot.
Then I spotted another one on the carport floor, and only two in the nestbox. Chick number 5 was nowhere to be found, and all three cats were out.
The Munni-cat was in full hunting mode already, but being the darling she is, she allowed me to pick her up and carry her inside - although she wasn’t happy.
The other two didn’t let me catch them, but I soon lured them inside by letting them hunt a feathered cat toy that ‘flew’ into the living room. No real bird was harmed.
Now, almost 12 hours later, one chick is left in the nestbox and I’ve lost track of the others. The parents are still around, sounding very agitated. I hope their other chicks are just hiding in the bushes somewhere.
