Lahti
We went cityspotting to Lahti again. This time we explored the Lake Vesijärvi and it's surroundings and Kariniemi Arboretum and Lanu park. Buddha was with us so we didn't visit any cafes or terraces that were in a very nice settings.
We learned some new historic facts. For instant Lahti had an airport during WWII. The lake that is in the pictures was an ice airport during winter time. The railway station came to the Vesijärvi harbor so it was kind of a logistic hub of the area.
The yellow house is the old railway station, It's about 130 years old and is a cafe today. It's right by the shore.
The Lanu park is the arboretum and a Sculpture Park. It's an officially protected grove hill near the centre of Lahti. Amidst the wide range of luxuriant vegetation are works in concrete by sculptor Olavi Lanu of Lahti. I put two pictures of statues in the collage. I liked the one on the right the most. It was very impressive and beautiful. He designed them so that the moss that will appear (he hoped) in time onto the statues, are part of the design. He wanted the art to mix with the nature. Some of the statues were originally designed to Venice Biennale 1978. City of Lahti commisioned him to design the park 1989 and he used some of these pieces from Venice in the park. It was a fantastic place to wonder around. Just beautiful with the art and the different trees and lovely landscapeing.
