Bouillon Road Milestone
My blip today is taken in St. Andrews in the road by the Little Chapel. The focal point of the picture is the small granite pillar in the undergrowth. This is in fact a milestone. Although it appears to indicate 111 miles it is in fact Roman numerals, indicating 3 miles. This is the distance to the Church in St. Peter Port.
The first 'main' roads in Guernsey were built in 1810 to allow troops to travel swiftly across the island. There were three of these. The first ran from town to L'Eree via St. Martins and the Forest, The second from town to Vazon via the Castel and the third ran along Belle Greve bay to L'Ancresse, along route Militaire, over the reclaimed Braye du Valle.
Other roads were improved over the next decade. In 1820 the milestones were erected and many are still in place today.
