Just Like That

Despite a career spanning fifty years, last night was the first time I’d seen Bonnie Raitt in concert. Sadly, due to Mrs C’s transport issues, she has still not seen Bonnie Raitt in concert! A shout out on a few WhatsApp groups resulted in a volunteer to use the ticket - she hadn’t heard of Bonnie but had listened to few tracks on Spotify and thought it was something she would probably like.
And it was an excellent concert from a great band. A mix of old and new material, ranging from heartfelt ballads to bluesy rockers featuring her trademark slide guitar playing. The support act was a chap called Gareth Dunlop. I’d never heard of him but he’s written several tunes that have been picked up by things on Netflix. If I had to describe his style, I’d say “Irish Bruce Springsteen with a bit of John Legend thrown in” I bought the CDs he had on the merch stand and look forward to listening to them.
The overall theme of the evening was definitely how badly the pandemic affected us all and how detrimental it was for live music in particular. Both artists had delayed the release of their latest albums due to Covid and Bonnie in particular had really missed touring. Not all bad though as she did win a lifetime achievement Grammy last year and the single “Just Like That” won the record of the year Grammy at this years awards!
She did mention that the band had visited the Lake District on their day off - she loved Windermere and would like to explore further. At the age of 73, she stated she has no intention of slowing down and promised she’d be back soon. Mrs C might get to see her yet…
