The Mound
Not the familiar Edinburgh Mound but the 910m causeway and roadbridge constructed to a design by Thomas Telford across the mouth of Loch Fleet from 1813 to 1816. Sluices in the arches of the bridge are operated by an ingenious system of chains and pulleys to control the flow of water between the sea and the Loch. The cottage in the distance was the sluice keepers cottage. Telford's bridge is now overshadowed by the modern A9 and the stream of traffic following Route 500.
