Dover Castle
We made it to Dover Castle today, and we were very glad we didn’t try to squeeze it in yesterday. The site has been home to fortifications of some description since the 1st century and the current castle dates back to Henry II, and Henry III. There are still Roman light towers on the site as well. It provides an amazing insight into life at that time as the interior has been preserved in keeping with that period of time. The castle itself has been attacked many times and survived a particularly gruelling siege. It does seem to be an impenetrable fortress. The grounds are also home to over 3 miles of tunnels which were used initially against Napoleon, and then were very significant in WWII. This is the main castle in the background of these photos, but there are fortresses and walls everywhere we looked. I think we all found it very interesting… but the most notable comment of the day would probably be Jane.. (while exploring the medieval tunnels)… “I am really going to need my gwug gwa (special blanket) to be able to sleep tonight. Unfortunately for Jane that is one of only a couple of things we managed to forget to bring with us.
