Lock-up

"In C18, the Lock-Up would have been used for local drunks and for safe-keeping overnight of prisoners being moved by stage coach or awaiting trial by the magistrates who sat at The George And Dragon. It was last used in 1885 for a lad aged 14 who was found stealing mangel-wurzels (mangolds) from a farmer's field."

The Minx loves Glastonbury. Really loves it. Since before I've known her, she's gone along every year, except during Lockdown in 2020, and then in 2021, when the festival wasn't on but we went to camp at Worthy Farm, anyway.

This year, the huge operation amongst an extended group of friends and friends of friends, that has previously delivered tickets every year, failed, much to the Minx's dismay.

But she didn't give up and, in desperation, rang a chap for whom she's previously worked as a steward. She'd already tried him but all his spaces were taken, but, as luck would have it, on the day she tried again, someone had just dropped out, and there was no one else on the waiting list who was already trained. Hooray!

This did, however, add a complication to our plans. The Minx would be at the festival from today until next Monday, which is when we are travelling to the Isle Of Wight for a meeting.

In the end, we realised the only way this was going to work would be for me to drive down with her, stay nearby, and then pick her up on the Monday.

So, today, I arrived in what AirBnB lists as "a tiny home". It's not the lock-up in my picture, but a former shop, that has been converted into a small house. Downstairs is a double bed and shower/WC, then a very tight and narrow spiral staircase takes you up to a small living room with a kitchen area. It's great.

So, we stopped at the tiny home to drop off my stuff (and so the Minx could have a nosey), and then I took her to the festival. It made my heart ache watching her walk off down the field, pulling her well-laden festival trolley behind her.

And after that, I stopped off at Tesco's in Shepton Mallet to stock up for the week, and then, later on, when the day had cooled a little, I went out for a run, which is when I saw the lock-up,
