Botolphs to Ditchling Beacon

Goodness, it was hot today!!
We had a ten mile walk, starting with an ascent to the top of the  ridge at Truleigh Hill (216 m high). After a brief  stop at the  youth hostel there, we  walked on to Fulking escarpment ( main blip) and  Devil's Dyke (in extras) which is the  deepest dry valley in the UK. It is a spectacular feature although  rather marred by the tawdry pub close by. In Victorian  times it was the site of a leisure centre with cable car, funicular railway and zoo! At least, those have gone now.
We came off the  ridge and down into Pyecombe to eat our lunch in the cool of the  shepherds' church, which positively encourages ramblers  to rest there, even providing soft drinks.
Then it was up hill again and onto  Ditchling Beacon. The other extra shows one of the  old dew ponds built to provide water for the sheep and cattle on these dry downs.
So, so, pleased we have a rest day tomorrow!
