Spelunking Together

Day 7

Spelunking at Carlsbad Caverns National Park, down in the cool of the earth while temperatures in excess of 100 degrees radiated overhead, the perfect way to spend the day!

When evening came, we found ourselves sitting on stone benches in an outdoor theater, across the canyon from the natural opening to the cave, designed to watch the flight of bats, en route to their evening meal. Three years of drought have reduced the number of bats that are presently flying out of the cave. Some nights they fly out en masse, and others they don't come out. We only saw small numbers at a time, this night, but just sitting out, listening to the night sounds and watching as the desert came to life, was well worth the experience of just being there.
