Stromness

We had a glorious sunny evening strolling around Stromness after dinner last night and it was more of the same this morning. With a full day ahead of us we had another leisurely wander enjoying the narrow twisty main thoroughfare and the lanes and ginnels that lead off it either up to the top of the town or down to the harbour. The main one here with enough room for a rare parking space has this  lovely little  garden with a seat. I would love to have that!
The boat leaving is the inter island ferry to Graemsay. Lots of islands beyond Mainland make up Orkney,

After a coffee on the harbour we headed out for more exploring. More Neolithic sites; Barnstown Village excavated next to the Stones of Stenness of the same era. Passed a few places we’ve seen before and
drove around the north coast coming to the Broch of Gurness, a Pictish, Iron Age settlement later used by the vikings for burials.

Next stop Kirkwall, fancy shops and the cathedral where we bought some sandwiches from a very nice deli and took them down to a car park overlooking Scapa Flow and the Churchill barriers - more recent history which we’ve visited before as we stayed on Burray which is connected by the barriers

All this to fill our day as we have a late ferry tonight from Kirkwall overnight to Lerwick, Shetland. A long day but we have enjoyed it especially with the great weather!

Doing this on my phone in the ferry queue as I won’t get WiFi till on board. Will add extras later if I can.
Excited!

Extra added of the Broch of Gurness
