On the road again
This time from the eastern suburbs of Perth to a small town called Merredin. After the Perth Hills we travelled through wheat growing country. In the collage you can see the wheat growing nicely after rain, the railway line (runs from Sydney to Perth) and the water pipe to Kalgoorlie. I loved this naked silo, many have art work on them but I liked the simplicity of the plain white. The train is the Indian Pacific which we were lucky enough to travel on back in 2019. It’s exciting seeing things with happy memories, maybe it’s an old ship or train or view from the past.
The extra shows part of the old wooden water pipe which runs from a dam east of Perth to Kalgoorlie. It was built in 1903 to provide water for the goldfields - 560km long. It is a national engineering landmark. Many leaks caused problems from corrosion, donkeys kicking it, cars running into it or white ants. During the depression it employed many men to cut timber and repair the pipe. These wooden pipes lasted until 1971 and are now all replaced by a more permanent material. I’m not sure what that is or how the water is pumped but hopefully I will find out in the coming days.
We are staying in a very well designed caravan park, you just drive in and stop. No unhooking of the car needed. We had glorious sunny winter weather and head off bright and early tomorrow to the next stop (Kalgoorlie).
The problems with my travel site (WikiCamps) are improving. They had a major upgrade and warned us to log in to update our information, which I did about a week ago. The first day of the upgrade I couldn’t even get it to upload. The second day I uploaded it - but alas no info there. Yesterday a bit more info come through and today I have our plan up until about a month ago. Weird how it seems to be coming back from the dead. It has a clever tool which guides you to your campsite (via Google maps) by clicking on an icon. However today it took us to the middle of the town and not the caravan park. It also took us off the Roe Highway onto the Great Eastern Highway by turning left - not right and doing a U turn. On the highway! Really what is wrong with a right hand turn onto a major freeway. There we were heading back into Perth. Anyone would think I can’t navigate. All we need to do is head into the sun and drive for 3500 Km and we are home. Simple.
A good day.
