New well!

New month, new well! Finola had been for coffee and the host remarked casually, have you seen the well? Well she was on to me pretty quick and today I rang up Tomás to see if I could come and do a recce. We had a great time. Not far from home on the outskirts of Ballydehob in a wonderfully wild and remote location, down a tiny, bosky boreen. The well was tucked into a slope and has all the correct credentials:
 large lintel - tick
rectangular basin - tick
fresh cold water - tick
a kneeling slab with inscribed cross - double tick
and some verbal history -  double tick.
Tomás, originally from Germany, has been here for 35 years now and when he bought the house he was shown the well by the previous owner who told him it was a holy well, and showed him how to inscribe the flat kneeling stone with a cross as he said the correct prayers.
Tomás also told us that he's seen a fox taking a drink from it and a mink having a swim in it.
No sign of it on the old maps or in the Archaeological Inventory but a verbal reference is pretty good.
We sat in his wild and wonderful garden drinking freshly made mint tea. A very enjoyable encounter.
