Inspired by Ambleside rush-bearing festival
This ancient festival is a real community event and anyone can join the procession providing they are carrying rushes, originally used to refresh the earth floor in the church. Some participants just held a simple bunch with a few flowers tucked in. Others were elaborately made with a moss base like this globe and were refurbished every year. The brass band led them round the village and into the church where I joined them for a short service. Then I left the locals to enjoy gingerbread and a sausage roll before taking part in some sporting activities. I’m pleased the weather was kind to them.
