Inspired by an old engraving.
I’m fascinated by this 1835 illustration of the Ambleside Rushbearing Festival. There are aspects that I recognise from yesterday’s celebration. The impressive floral decorations and the brass band are there and the spectators lining their route as they travel round the village. I wonder if all the children will get a sausage roll and a piece of gingerbread?
I can’t help thinking that they aren’t going to enjoy an afternoon of sports on the school playing fields wearing those fancy clothes!
