The internal workings
Next week I’m due to deliver my crocus hat to Saffron Walden museum, but as I unpacked it from SuffolkOpen Studios I wasn’t happy with the shape.
I’ve decided it needed more structure, so have added in a layer of a material known as ‘blocking net’ . I haven’t used it before in this way, but it’s worked absolutely wonderfully. very pleased with the support it has given.
Unfortunately, it’s now no longer manufactured, but I have quite a bit which I’ve acquired over the years. I have used it as a base for turban type hats before, but never used it dampened. I believe it’s treated with a cornstarch type of stiffening agent, which when dry, holds its shape, but isn’t too heavy. Another successful experiment
This is actually the concave inner of the hat. I think it must be the tessellation of the shapes which makes the Centre look proud.
