Aachener Dom
We drove from Landau to Aachen, after a leisurely and excellent breakfast at the hotel. It took about 3.5 hours. We got pulled over by 2 unmarked police cars. They thought our number plate was falling off, but it’s a numerplate that you can change between 2 different cars. They were fine, all wearing jeans and t-shirts, and let us get on our way.
We checked into a grand hotel, the Quellenhof in Aachen, very nice place and v good value for money. We went straight into the city and tourist info to see what tours were available. We took a brochure for a self guided tour of the old town, then went over to the cathedral where you could go around with a guide. It was worthwhile, as the guide took you to see the main windows in the gothic part up close, the golden casket with Charlemagne/Karl der Große and the throne, made out of now discolored white marble, which is said to have come from Jesus’s grave. It’s very old and has much ancient graffiti on it, which is a couple of thousand years old.
We walked around all the places on the old town tour, then went to the Goldenen Schwann, for dinner. We finished the last few stops on the tour and went back to the hotel. I had a swim before the lovely pool at the hotel closed.
