For the Very First Time
It had been just over a year. She found herself approaching the same cafe, across the same cobbled square, bizarrely in the same heels she'd worn the year before. 'Old faithfuls' she called them, just out for certain occasions; gorgeous, sexy, yet incredibly comfortable.
The salty breeze ran through her hair and her memory, it was like she'd never been away. She knew who would be waiting at the cafe, sat at a circular table looking out past the fountain towards the sea. A cold glass of Coke being slowly sipped. Her date would have been there a while, not wanting to miss this moment, and in many ways she'd wanted to be there sooner too, but knew that all the best things come to those who wait.
"Excuse me miss, do you happen to know the way to the old fortress?" said a young voice, a teenage boy attached to his younger sister in a vice like grip. Not the usual kind of historical tourists, more like they'd got separated from their parents and would rather have been on the beach.
"Of course," she replied in a soft voice, "follow the Esplanade and at the end turn right, there are signs from there."
"Thank you very much, thank you." He humbly said, she was somewhat surprised at his manners and also the fact that he knew she spoke English. She stood smiling after the young pair as they made their way through the old men who adorned the fountain at this time of day.
"I should go." she thought, knowing that her date would be waiting, and that actually she was very excited.
As she moved around the fountain, across the cobbles she could faintly hear the music from the cafe, some 80's cheese, it made her smile. She could also just make out a familiar voice, "Another Coke for me please, and a Sprite for my friend...no, no, she'll be here in a minute"
Her heart skipped a beat, her throat got all dry and as she rounded the corner she knew she'd made the right decision, taken a risk and it had paid off, made a choice that made her happy, for the very first time.
