Street Signs

To Leigh this morning to get some documents signed.

Whilst there I had a quick wander through part of the town centre. Signs of all sorts everywhere.

Psephologists will be taking a lot of interest in signs of voting intentions in Leigh and other “red wall” parliamentary constituencies. A traditional Labour seat, it went Conservative in 2019, providing Boris Johnson with his landslide victory. That result reflected it also voting firmly for Brexit in 2016. There are many reasons people voted for Brexit, it’s a heart and not a head thing I think. Anti- immigrant, anti-foreigner, blaming the country’s ills on “Europe”, a feeling of disenfranchisement including with the political class. Whatever, many politicians are keenly aware of the need to appeal to places like this, so reading the invisible signs of how people feel and think is probably more important to them than reading the street and shop signs.
