Gjógv

This morning we woke up having not made definite plans for the day. However, since there was some sun in Tórshavn, we decided to go for a scenic trip, and settled on Gjógv.

We got the Klaksvik bus, and then changed to a minibus for the final leg. It finished with the mountain road we drove on Saturday, but today the clouds were low. However, in Gjógv, we had some sunny spells, allowing us to enjoy a walk up along the cliff edge to 160m, giving a fine view of the village and its valley. Then, after a short traverse, we dropped back down into the village.

The singular feature of Gjógv is a narrow, natural harbour, with a winch railway for hauling up goods. Its sheltered waters and nearby winch house gave A the opportunity she's been looking for all trip - the chance to swim in the North Atlantic. She wasn't in for long!

Afterwards we went up to the small hotel in the village and, eventually, were able to order two excellent hot sandwiches and chips. We finished eating just in time to get the first of the two buses back to Tórshavn.

This evening we watched HB Tórshavn play Derry City at the national football stadium, Tórsvøllur, in the first qualifying round of the Europa Conference League (see extra). It was the third European qualification game for Faroese teams in as many days, and all finished 0-0! We sat in the Derry City end, where the atmosphere was better than what we saw on the pitch, as neither team created many chances, and seemed more intent on not losing.
