Lune Gorge, a transport artery

This is taken from one of the low Howgill Fells overlooking the Lune gorge near Tebay.
The M6 is clearly seen, and close to it is the main west coast rail line. Above is the 'old' road to Kendal. The River Lune is below the railway.

It's hard to imagine this without the M6 now. To the right the road ascends to Shap Summit which, quite rightly, is notorious for its extreme weather. Before the motorway was built I remember bus journeys over Shap in winter on the A6 which were pretty grim.

The noise of the motorway is very obvious at altitude. However if you move some metres away from the crest then it disappears. You are left with the sound of the skylark. Splendid!
