Evening light on across the Kyles of Bute
A day which began with squally showers, dark clouds and gusty winds ended in a gloriously tranquil and sunny evening.
We were planning to visit Mount Stuart Gardens this morning. That was scuppered by the early morning weather. Instead we drove to Ettrick Bay on the west coast to see if conditions were any better. They weren’t. The whole area was busy with Bute Fest meaning the cafe was full to overflowing.
We watched the rain for a while and a couple of cold water swimmers braving the waves before returning to the B&B to brush up for the post wedding hog roast. People were in various states of fragility from the night before. More drink was available to those who needed the hair of the dog with the hog, salads, cheeses and mountainous cakes as well.
Too soon it was time to say goodbye to the bride and groom and their respective parents and family and thank them for their astounding hospitality.
Meanwhile, the weather had improved so we returns to Ettrick Bay walking along the coast as we hoped to have done in the morning. A fine late afternoon walk alongside the Bay and coast towards Port Glas where we stopped to examine some super rock pools before returning to the car.
Our final destination was Rhubodack at the northern tip of Bute where a ferry crosses the narrows of the Kyle of Bute to Colintraive on the mainland. Fabulous light as you can see.
The last hours of the evening have been spent watching the light fade over Rothesay Bay from the windows of the B&B, seeing swifts and gannets swoop by.
What a wonderful few days we’ve had, not spoilt too much by the weather. Tomorrow we cross back to Wemyss Bay and onwards to Seahouses in Northumberland via North Berwick and Dunbar to spend a few days with Susan’s sister’s family who are camping (and caravanning) for a week near Bamburgh.
Thank you for all your comments over the past few days. Very much appreciated, as always.
