Dumfries House

Part of the Dumfries estate managed by the King’s Foundation which rescued the 1759 built house and it’s original contents in 2007 when everything was in danger of being sold and dispersed around the world.

The house was magnificent inside and out. A guided tour gave an excellent insight into the house, its occupants and furniture. Chippendale furniture figured prominently in many rooms along with many other beautiful objects. A guided tour is a far better way to get an understanding of the place rather than haphazard wanderings through many rooms.

As well as the house there are many other attractions on the estate. Entry to the grounds is free and this includes the walled garden, arboretum and plenty of areas for children to play.

Furthermore, the estate offers a whole range of courses on a range of activities including heritage crafts, well being, leadership, outdoor education, a rare breed farm and an educational garden.

While all this is very admirable I felt that the Foundation didn’t really make it clear about these activities and the benefits they brought to the local area. Neither did we really know what we could go and see. And, as usual, the estate map could have been much more accurate and informative.

Otherwise, what a place worth a visit and well worth driving across Scotland from Edinburgh to the western side of the country to see.
