A Dragon Rampant

We met Kate and Sophie in Taunton today to visit the Somerset County Museum which is hosting an exhibition of artwork by Axel Schaefer, the book illustrator most famous, perhaps, for illustrating the children’s books by Julia Donaldson.

The exhibition itself was fascinating with lots of information about the process behind his work and there was also a book quiz trail around the rest of the museum which Sophie thoroughly enjoyed doing. It was very popular and busy on a wet day.

Despite living in Somerset for 44 years, this was our first visit to the Museum but we will definitely go back on a quieter day as it presents a vey interesting history of the County from prehistoric times to the present day in a lively and entertaining way.

The blip is of a new statue, that has appeared in the shopping precinct near the Museum, of the dragon that has been chosen as the new symbol of the County and which forms the centrepiece of the new County flag. On the flag it’s described as , A Dragon Rampant Gules (red). I thought it was a Wyvern but apparently they only have two legs and two wings, while a dragon has 4 limbs and two wings.
