South Kit Hill Mine
Kit Hill is a prominant landmark in South-east Cornwall, situated between Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor. It can be seen for miles around and has spectacular views from its summit, which is topped by an old chimney (the summit stack). Unfortunately the chimney on the top is covered with communications equipment which is unsightly when viewed up close. This is the remains of the South Kit Hill Mine (1856 - 1884). The mine once extracted tin ore from a maximum depth of over 100m. However, it ultimately proved to be unprofitable and by 1882 had effectively ceased to operate. A narrow road will take you to the top of Kit hill, but I chose to walk from Callington and return via Kelly Bray. There is then a marked trail around the top of the hill which is good for getting a better understanding of the area.
