Diary of an Edinburgher

Cruise Day Two

What a great day we had. After a delicious breakfast - everything you could desire, including Bircher meusli.

There were three different trips today, we had chosen to explore the beer cellars under the city. Probably because the others involved a lot of walking. And we were very glad we had chosen this one. It was so interesting.

The guide was very good. The cellars were used as bomb shelters during the war. Nuremberg was almost totally destroyed, like Dresden, but the fatalities were a fraction of Dresden's.

They reminded us of the cellars in Champagne, except they were often very low, and lots of steep steps up and down, and the floors were very uneven. At the end of the tour we had a sample of three different beers.

Nuremberg is a beautiful city. (Extra) I am so glad we did the beer tour - the other tours - the castle, and the Court rooms for the war crime trials, though interesting, didn't actually include the city.

Back to the boat for lunch, safety drill, and to watch as we went through the first of several locks in this part of the canal.

We were invited to a special meal in the special 'Portobello' restaurant this evening (everyone gets invited). It was a five course Italian extravaganza, with different wines accompanying each course. We were seated with a couple of personable Canadians, so that was fun. I love hearing of other peoples' lives and travels. But we piked out of the quiz evening with the other Aussies after the meal. We need to pace ourselves...
