Top performance

Went to see Elkie Brooks at the Fringe by the Sea Big Top.

Don't really know what we were expecting - probably for her to do the handful of hits you remember from the '70s.

But what a voice. And backed by a tight band, she powered through two sets of rock, soul and blues songs - including, of course, the hits.

When she sang Pearl's a singer, the crowd sang along. She thanked them, saying "Do you know? I've been singing this song for (pause) forty six years. And sometimes...I forget the words."

I suspect I wasn't the only one who laughed then thought "wait, what? Forty six years?"

A brilliant night.
