A Slower Paced Day
I took the train from Glasgow Central to Martin and Katherine’s house and we journey through the gorgeous countryside to have lunch (Cullen skink for me!) beside Lake Menteith, the only “lake”in Scotland. ( all the rest are Lochs) Tradition has it that Menteith betrayed Sir William Wallace to English soldiers, which led to Wallace's death so the body of water which bore his family’s name could not be honored by using the Scottish word Loch. A few years ago we visited Inchmahone Priory on the island you see in the top photo. Mary Queen of Scots hid there for a time when she was being hunted by Queen Elizabeth (and we all know how that ended!). We next went to The Smith Gallery in Sterling. A wonderful wee museum and the home of the world’s oldest football. (Soccer ball to all you Yanks!). And if you are wondering why a Tunnock tea cake is feature, it is because the red tiger in the gallery behind Katherine is made of Tunnock wrappers! Instead of a chocolate on my pillow when I arrived at my hotel it was a Tunnock tea cake! Gift 223: easy train ride.
