Churchill
This morning we took C's dog for a walk in the woodland above their house.
It was so good to see so many tracks for walking. It is very countryfied around here with lots of trees. The roads can be a nightmare with difficult junctions and fast driving, especially if there has been an accident on the M25. The houses are very different to Somerset, beautiful old brick buildings, very up together and manicured. One senses this is near London with Regent Street only 19 miles away!
In the afternoon we went to Westerham their nearest little town and on the Green is this statue of Sir Winston Churchill, this being his parish as Chartwell is only a stone's throw away. He was sculpted by Oscar Nemon (a Croatian) in 1969 and the large limestone plinth was a gift from the people of Yugoslavia and Marshall Tito. It is Grade II listed.
In the church is the memorial to Major General James Wolfe, conqueror of Quebec who was killed in the hour of victory on 13 September 1759. He was born in 1727 and lived his childhood in Westerham. He was only 32 when he died! (see extra photo).
