Was it something I said that produced this expression on my niece’s face? I was down at the craft fair at St John’s Church where she has a stall selling woven pictures of fairy stories with an audio link to hear them.
I walked there by a back route thereby missing most of the crowds and it was very pleasant in the warmth and sunshine.

I was very engrossed today in the book , the Stromness Dinner by Peter Benson, a book the Edinburgh Libraries appeared not to have but which Amazon sent within a day. It is a novel but is firmly set in Stromness sending me back there in my mind with all the familiar descriptions and place names. It was such an easy and funny read but not probably a choice for the book group.

I had to drag myself away from it to go for a walk and stand and watch some performers more or less on my doorstep entertaining a large crowd with loud music and audience interaction. There is a certain reluctance on my part to clap and cheer on command and so I was one of the non participant onlookers standing watching but not involved.

The State schools are back and the weather as usual is still good. It seems strange that the Scottish schools go back in the middle of high summer when there is still so much for children to do, at least in Edinburgh. I have my Elgin twin grandchildren beginning their last year at  school and my two other Scottish grandchildren sitting their National 5s this year. How time flies for grandparents.
