The accidental finding

By woodpeckers

They paddle with staccato feet

... in powder pools of sunlight
small blue busybodies
strutting like fat gentlemen
with hands clasped
under their swallowtail coats....

I went to Tesco's after work, then the park to see the cygnets and eat my sarnie. But I got fascinated by the pigeons instead. There were two chasing each other: is it mating, or fighting, all that running around? I cannot tell. I noticed maybe for the second time in my life that all pigeons are different. Hardly a profound observation, but...

Back home, I put up the parasol (yay!) with a bit of string and bamboo splinting for the broken limb, and then lay back in the hammock for a while, before my friend Karen arrived with the makings of supper. I had lured her here to play the board game Trivial Pursuit. Her daughter was away on a school trip, so we had more time together than usual. As for the game, I had not played it for more than 20 years, but was recently given a set. It was THE game of Christmas 1984! I found it hadn't dated as much as I'd feared. CleanSteve was out, so it was just the two of us, and I won. Yay! again.

We ate home made falafels with all the trimmings, in the garden, before Karen left and I went to watch the 50oth episode of Pointless (TV show) that I'd recorded earlier. I need to watch it with Karen sometime, as I am hoping we'd make a great team. She knows a lot about Formula One racing, and I've read a few obscure books in my life. That, though, is just the start of it. Most importantly, though, we enjoy a belly laugh whenever we meet.
