My work colleague Karen lives nearby and often takes her dog for walks in these woods. When I met her there last week, she told me about an alternative path down from the top of the hill, avoiding the bracken which is now taller than we are.

I tried the new path today; it goes right down through old conifer forest and is dark and eerie. Then right in the middle of it, I saw this magnificent beech tree. It only has leaves at the top, where there is enough light. The rest of the tree is in semi-darkness.

Jess had a great time running around. She is ready for her tea now :-)
