Back Around The Block - Former Modelo Prison
Had one meeting today but the rest was doing the washing and unpacking after our 11 days away. Dd had to get her head down for item writing deadlines and encouraged me NOT to do likewise. So, lots of walking around the city interspersed with sitting on benches in the new pedestrianised streets listening to Michael Parkinson interviews from his rich back catalogue.
Even as boy, I always wanted him to push further/dig deeper and I still have a sense of that now, although he does more of it than I recall. His guest list was beyond comparison and his interview with Richard Burton riveting . . . when asked about his voice and whether he thought it was was particularly Welsh, Burton spontaneously replied, ‘Yes . . . it is the deep, dark answer from the valleys to everyone.’ Parkinson took it no further, even a ‘Say more’ invitation would have been enough.
I once was in full preparation mode to apply to the BBC for their very special and near-impossible-to-get-into management trainee program (4 places for 6,000 applicants). It was at the start of my fourth year of law studies and I had just come back from Egypt. A collapse due to a very severe infection of Hepatitis A with weeks in hospital and a ten-week long convalescence at home put paid to that. One wonders!!
