The Main Tower View

Frankfurt Day 6

Leisurely breakfast is morning and decided that we would get the s-bahn into town as the temperatures were pretty high from early on. We had a coffee revive sitting outside the beautiful Opera House, which we found out was bombed in the war and the only original bits are the front and the roof . It sits in a large square with a massive fountain in the middle with a stone circle seat round it and there are cafes for people watching. As Frankfurt has a large financial district, all the suits stroll by at lunchtime so we enjoyed the view:)

After the revive we headed to the Main Tower which has a viewing platform 360 degrees with an absolutely stunning view of the city. The lift up was an experience and jam packed and hot! i just took deep breaths and it took 56 seconds to reach the top. Frankfurt is nicknamed Mainhattan as there are many many glass high rises and the river is the River Main. You can see it behind Ms G here - muddy due to the thunderstorms last week.

Well, we oooood and aaaaaaaaahd at the fantastic view and sat a while just looking. Then G got up and was rummaging in Super Dry. 'What you looking for' I asked? 'a euro to use the telescope G said!!!! Now, I have never know her to be interested in getting close ups of buildings before, but I had just pointed out to her where A beautiful building was and she wanted to see it close up - she admitted it was the first time she had ever used a telescope and luckily I had found a euro in my pocket as she looked quite upset to not finding one.. she dashed over before anyone else could use it and zoomed in on this building taking ages to look at it, but couldn't quite find the lovely Italian style balcony we had seen from the river. Turns out she was checking out Imran's flat but no luck. Probably out strolling elegantly along the river bank, flicking back his dark hair with his long elegant finger!!

Later that evening we had a booking at an authentic African restaurant. Now this was some experience. Inside it was almost dark with sand on the ground. There were different types of booths but the one that caught my eye was up a ladder and it was like an enormous bunk bed with fur draped over. Candles burned all around but as it was so dark we decided to eat outdoors. We ordered a mixed platter of 6 different foods.

It arrived in a big platter with a straw hat thing on the top along with flat bread, but stretchy type bread. I asked for the cutlery and the waiter said 'Oh no you use the bread to eat and your fingers' . ' That's disgusting' G said, quietly)!!! We hadn't washed our hands and there wasn't even napkins to wipe dribbles with.. It was difficult to get the spinach sauce stuff on the bread but we did manage. It was........ Well it was ok and a different experience but no cutlery for sauce stuff didn't really work. We had a laugh at it though:)

We then sauntered along the street to this very posh hotel who had a sax player in the outdoor sitting area so we enjoyed a nice evening sitting relaxing listening to him.

Phew, exhausted, another busy but brilliant day in Frankfurt. This city is vibrant, plenty to see and do and the transport system is the best I have experienced. I haven't seen one traffic jam in such a big city!

Last day tomorrow.......

izzy are you sure you want us to come to Oban??????
