We managed to fit in yet another exhibition on our way home- “Threads of Life”, superb huge tapestries depicting the stages of creation.
However I was most struck by the massive Jubilee Table laid out in the nave made from a massive 55metre plus oak that grew 5000 years ago, growing 1500 years before Stonehenge. As the sea crept in and created a morass the mighty oaks fell and this one absorbed the brackish water and then was preserved in peat before being unearthed on farmland in our time. Great craftmanship went into the slow drying out of the trunk then saw milling beautiful long long planks which fitted together in undulating curves. This wood is known as black oak and is a dream to work with for special furniture and to produce a wonderful sound in musical instruments but resources are finite.
