MARKET LOOT

The weather is bitterly cold this morning. Maybe that is the reason that I bought a punnet of Tannie Suzette's mixed cakes. Included are a Hertzog cookie which is basically a jam tart with a coconut meringue mixture on top. Right next to it is the Ouma Smuts tart which has jam but is topped with a plain cake mixture. Ouma Smuts was a frugal cook! The tarts are named after two important South African Generals at the turn of the previous century, General Hertzog and General Smuts.
The oranges are from my neighbour, Willie who abandoned his career as a policeman to follow his dream to become a farmer. He tells me that he learned all his farming skills from the farmers of Gamkaskloof, also known as "Die Hel". This isolated community produced the most marvellous crops using traditional methods with no insecticides etc.
