Tuesday: IAAM
This morning we went to the relatively newly opened International African American Museum, which aims to tell the story of America’s African American community, from their beginnings in Africa to the present day. It opened in May and is, I believe, considered to the first museum to take such a thorough approach.
It’s incredibly well done and, as you might imagine, moving. There is an awful lot to take in and we struggled to do it full justice, particularly in the latter part relating to the present day (mainly because we’d spent so much time in the early sections).
It was fascinating and worthwhile. The location is also no coincidence, it stands on the site of the docks in Charleston where most slaves arrived in America.
If you ever visit Charleston, I would heartily recommend it.
It seems very trivial to tell you that we had oysters and martinis afterwards so I’ll just mention that more as an aside for diary purposes.
