Between fen and mountains

Carlit and the twelve upper lakes

The road was open to the Lac de Bouillouses for the first time since June so we drove up to walk the circuit of the Carlit lakes, 12 kilometres and 400 metres of climbing. The weather was perfect for walking and we had lunch below the summit of Carlit, 2,921metres. We were only about two hours and 600 metres of climbing from the top but the last section is difficult and only two weeks ago someone slipped and fell to their death. We did not attempt it but I might be tempted another day. The path was very rocky with plenty of climbing over boulders so progress was slow. It took us six hours with stops. The lakes themselves were magnificent.
