American Military Cemetery

We went back to St Cast this morning before 8, and swam again. It was like a millpond and so lovely. Then we had breakfast in town before heading back to our friends to shower and pack. We left about 12 and headed to Ste Mère Église, the site of American paratroop landings on 6/6/44, especially the one Pte John Steele who was caught on the church roof for over two hours. Watch The Longest Day film.
Then we headed to Utah beach, Omaha beach and the American Military Cemetery above Omaha.
It’s beautiful, with the precisely aligned white marble memorials to 9386 soldiers who lost their lives to free Europe on the beaches. Seeing people swimming sunbathing and fishing on the beaches reminds us why we should be grateful.
We’re now in Bayeux for 3 nights.
