Europe by Van Day 4
Mr C was very pleased with my choice of a visit to Rothenberg yesterday. The town was extremely pretty in the evening light so we had a good look round, which took our walking yesterday up to 6 miles. It is obviously a very busy touristy town as there were several large parking sites for motor homes and the one we were in was full when we returned. The van was too hot to be in so we took out our chairs and sat behind the van (no space at either side, we were parked so close) to have a G&T. Nathaniel phoned - he seems quite nervous about Middle School which he started 2 days ago - his mum says he’s worried nobody will like him. Ironically he’s a most likeable boy - his last school report said he was “charismatic”. He said he’s looking forward to getting started on proper lessons and had got a book from the library about Nelson Mandela. Ella seeks him out at break to see how he is doing.
We got away today by 9.30. I was awake from 5 but let the driver sleep on. We went a short way south on the 7 then took the 6 towards Nuremberg. No wonder the roads are so good - there’s constant maintenance and improvements being done including adding more lanes from 3 to 4. Those poor workers laying boiling tar or concrete in this heat.
We crossed the Danube for the first time (this trip) as we by-passed Regensberg.
and began to see more Cz, Ro and Po lorries. The most surprising was a very new Eddie Stobbard from Bulgaria. It had no female names on the cab.
We stopped near the Austrian border to buy a motorway pass (€9.90) then continued on to our P4N outside Linz. It’s by a tennis court and we have parked by trees and a hedge for shade. It’s only 28 now. We drove 264 miles today and arrived at 4 after stopping for fuel which was 4c cheaper than the place outside Bonn. I’ve had a walk around some cornfields to have a stretch before a cup of tea and cake.
There wasn’t much to photograph from the motorway so you have a collage of Rothenberg, our evening walk yesterday.
