Mount Washington Cog Railway

Back blip for yesterday

It wasn’t the most glorious of days for a ride up Mount Washington but we made the best of it. It was cool and cloudy as we drove from our motel to the base of the mountain, passing the Mount Washington Hotel where the famous 1944 Bretton Woods Conference, considered to be the foundation of modern international banking, was held https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bretton_Woods_Conference

We looked at the train that was to take us up to the top of Mount Washington (6,288ft) and shook our heads in disbelief. In the event it was an interesting if slow haul up the hill. The views disappeared about half way and by the time we were at the top we were enclosed in mist. There was a small cafe and a small museum area where I came face to face with the rather gorgeous stuffed fox.

By the time we alighted at the bottom it was just starting to pour down and we watched as a group of visitors queued for the steam engine driven train (ours was biodiesel) with hoods up.

It dried up as we got nearer to North Conway and we stopped for lunch in a sort of hippyish gallery-cum-cafe. After that we were happy to settle down with reading matter. I am reading the latest John Banville. It’s a bit too ornate for my tastes but I’m soldiering on.
