Camino Day 12
After 255 km or 155 miles, we arrived in Santiago de Compostela. Only 5 miles today so we were there before 9 and just as well as my sister’s knee packed in. She certainly wouldn’t have managed any further. We went to the pilgrim office to see if we could easily get our certificates - I’d heard that queues were massive - and found that we only needed to wait for about 10 minutes which was perfect. After coffee we went into the cathedral and attended the pilgrim’s mass. Our favourite part was the swinging of the incense ball at the end. I wanted to laugh and clap at the same time. When I say swing I mean it. It went from side to side with great vigour and height. Tremendous fun! It was followed by a large group of musicians and singers in medieval garb singing what I thought might be a nationalist folk song of some description. Then we did clap. Great experience. Have really enjoyed it. The lack of walking tomorrow will be an enormous shock to the system!
