living in a glass house

10 am

It's 10 am.... somewhere?

Ok, so I didn't really do the photo challenge today. At 10 am we were getting ready to go, which is fairly hectic and uninspiring. Plus, we went to Open Farm Sunday and there were a lot of fun things to take photos of instead!

Chickpea rode a pony for the first time today, she grinned the whole time. This pony was named Meg. Monkey really liked the duckling. He wanted to feel every part of the duck (poor duckling) but he did try to be gentle I think. Both of them loved loved loved throwing hay (along with the rest of the children that came) and I think if we filled our back garden with hay (and hay bales to jump off of) we may never ever have to buy another toy!

Today I learned the difference between silage and haylage (silage is wetter) which I had been wondering about for a while (yes, really). I also learned about the nursing habits of pigs which I found very interesting- sows usually have 16-18 young and as many nipples (though the one we saw today had a brood of 7 which was abnormally small). The farmer said if they have less nipples, say 10, then they won't be put to breed as many of their young would most likely die from lack of food. Each piglet will pick one nipple which is theirs and only theirs and they never switch. So when nursing, the piglets will all sit in the same pattern every time they nurse. Fascinating stuff!
