The Cushion

Appleby, Boroughgate

The Crown and Cushion is one of the old inns, of which Appleby had numerous in medieval times and later. It has prime position for the Market Square and would have provided, not only refreshment and accommodation for travellers, but many other services. News was proclaimed and exchanged, newspapers read, meetings held, deals struck. The name was a way of pledging support for the monarchy, especially during the Civil War.

The building is probably around 300 years old, but could be older. It was altered in the early 18th century and given sash windows and curved door canopy. It has recently been totally refurbished inside, although I haven’t been inside to see what it is like. The outside certainly looks smarter than it used to do, despite it retaining all the outside appearance of a Listed building.

Today we had a brief visit to the Health Centre for Covid jabs. It was supposed to be Covid/Flu, which Gordon had. But I have never liked the idea of having two vaccines at the same time, so was booked in for Covid only. The nurse was fine with this, said I wasn’t the only one and I just had to make an appointment for flu later.
