Fortified

Another day of cycling. This time to a port town named Ars en Re around 10 miles away. It was another delightful place, with wider streets and larger gardens than Saint Martin, and a little more the domain of local artists.

We wandered the cobbled streets and alley ways, before stopping for lunch in a port side restaurant. Then explored the harbour and sailing club admiring the extensive and beautifully maintained facilities, before returning home for a rest and more sustenance.

This evening we’ve wandered the old town of Saint Martin finding new alleyways and figuring out some of the local history. We are feeling a little tired after our cycle ride so have had a relaxed dinner of baguette, cheese and tomato.

This photo shows parts of fortifications which lie at the boundary of the town of Saint Martin. They are extensive and complex, with several layers of moats which would have been filled by the sea.
