Looking North

Our last day on the Ile de Re. As we’d returned the bicycles, we walked through Saint Martin, along the ramparts to the local beach. We’d hoped we might be able to swim but the sea was out.

As you can see, in this area of France there are big tidal ranges. There were many people on the exposed sand collecting sea food - we assume mussels and cockles, and possibly oysters. We noticed how carefully you’d need to watch the tide as once it starts to come in, it moves quickly.

We returned ‘home’ for lunch - we treated ourselves to some line caught sea bass, which with vegetables and rice, along with one of the island’s wines, was delicious, and a perfect way to end this very special holiday.

The journey home went smoothly. La Rochelle airport is tiny and at 7pm we were the sixth and final departure of the day.
